A Pie for Mikey, Part 2
As if the food blogging community’s ability to organize and bake wasn’t impressive enough as exemplified by the social media phenomenon of #apieformikey, this week another #hashtag has shaken up the Twitter stream even more than the East Coast earthquake: #afundforjennie.
A Mitzvah for Mikey’s Family
Not to rest on their laurels after that amazing show of community and humanity, food bloggers are banding together again to do a mitzvah for Mikey’s family. A mitzvah, in the most simple terms, is “a good deed”.
If you didn’t read my last post, here’s a quick recap. A wonderful human being and food blogger, Jennifer Perillo, lost her husband suddenly and dramatically a couple of weeks ago. She has two young daughters to raise alone now and she just learned that she cannot collect widow’s benefits from Social Security because she earns too much money each year (max is a little over $14K!!). The health insurance for her and her kids runs out in December and the total premium she will have to pay will be more than her mortgage. It’s possible she’ll have to pay off the entire mortgage in one lump sum because the apartment was in his name alone.
Bloggers Without Borders
To help her deal with the harsh reality of suddenly being a sole provider to two young children, A Fund for Jennie has been set up by a new non-profit group Bloggers Without Borders.
So far, the support is impressive – over $14K raised by end of day August 23. If you would like to donate some money (any size contribution would be appreciated) you can do it directly through Bloggers Without Borders paypal page. But there is another way to give and you’ll get even more than a warm heart and a tax deduction in return. Many of us are donating items for auction – from baked goods to fully catered dinners to visiting the set of a food photo shoot. So you can donate money and get something fantastic for yourself as well.
OMG! Yummy Auction Items
I am donating two items – one to help you satisfy your sweet tooth and one to help you get your groove on.
Item #1: 2 dozen World Famous Uncle Dougalah’s Chocolate Rugelach to be delivered either for Rosh Hashanah or Hannukah. You can read about these rugelach here and here. Trust me, they are always the first to disappear from the dessert table. Bidding starts at $50. But bid quickly and high if you want them, they will go fast. I will pay for shipping in the U.S.
Item #2: I have 4 tickets to the Esperanza Spalding Concert at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles on Sept 30. Esperanza is a fabulous jazz musician who plays the bass and sings like a lark. She won New Artist of the Year last year (beating out Justin Bieber) Ok, ok, that doesn’t sound impressive, but she does. Listen to this: http://youtu.be/g-rWNAQx1ZE She has performed all over the world including the White House and for the Nobel Peace Prize party. The tickets are valued at $242.50. They are section ORCH, row X, seats 35-41. Bidding starts at $125. If you love music, you won’t be sorry you spent an evening with Esperanza.
To bid on either of my items, leave a comment below with your bid. Please be sure to leave your correct email address so I can contact you if you are the winning bidder and be clear about which item you are bidding on. If you are the winning bidder, you will have to pay for your item directly through the Bloggers Without Borders paypal link. If you prefer to bid on other items, head over here and check out all the items up for auction. Also, please pass on this post via social media to others and help us spread the word. Bidding for my two items will end Monday night, August 30, at midnight PST.
