Announcing TWO winners of OMG! Yummy’s “Cookbook of your Choice” Giveaway

Thanks to everyone who entered my first-ever giveaway on OMG! Yummy. I loved reading every single entry – I never seem to tire of meeting new people who love food and finding out what their inspiration is in the kitchen.

Wow – from cooking with butchers to learning about vegetarian cuisine in Japan! Your wish list was broad and fascinating. The most requested cookbook was Dorie Greenspan’s Around My French Table and the most-requested type of cookbook was about baking – from breads to desserts.

After reviewing all entries and asking Dormant Chef to do so independently from me, we both agreed there were two entries that touched our foodie hearts the most with their explanation of what cookbook they wanted and why so I’ve decided to have two winners instead of just one!

Annelies who requested Baked by Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito touched my heart by explaining that she fell in love with this book in her mother-in-law’s kitchen and particularly loves the variations offered in the book. Here’s what she said:

“This is a fun idea. Like you, I feel my life transformed by online recipes and food blogs. The feel of a cookbook in hand or (more likely propped up on the counter) can’t be beat. The cookbook I would most like to get my hands on right now is one I saw in my MIL’s kitchen called Baked. It has all these great desserts in it and I especially love their “variations” section at the end of each recipe to slightly tweak the recipe and make it “new.” Fabulous. While the big baking season is over, there are always, birthdays, holidays and parties to plan for… ”

The other entry we both were particularly drawn to was from Cheryl who plans to retire in Mexico someday but can’t find bread the style she loves when she is visiting. So she wants to become an expert bread maker and perhaps open a bakery in Mexico when they retire. Now that’s an attitude I really admire – the lack of bread is her opportunity to learn and create both bread and a business! Go Cheryl. She already has Tartine Bread by Chad Robertson and loves it but would like any bread book by Peter Reinhart. I have chosen Artisan Breads Every Day – his newest book. Here was Cheryl’s entry:

“What a fun idea Beth! And you know me, I never want to miss out on fun! So here goes… My husband and I travel a lot to Mexico (specifically Cabo San Lucas) and we have decided that eventually we will move to Mexico to retire. One food item that I miss terribly while there is GOOD bread. They do not understand the concept of “Sourdough”. Forget finding good baguettes, a country rye, or even a yummy olive bread. So my task for 2011 is to conquer and master bread baking, to take that skill with me to Mexico. I currently own the book, “Tartine Bread” by Chad Robertson. A book that must be read cover to cover to understand his passion behind making a great bread. So should I win the cookbook, I would like any bread baking book by Peter Reinhart. He has many out and I would leave it up to you to pick it out for me. Who knows, maybe when I retire in Mexico I’ll open up a little bread shop!”

Beth- I was so excited to come back from TX for a family emergency last weekend and see a box waiting for me at home. Baked is currently occupying the floor space next to my bed waiting to be read and relished. I will keep you posted on what I “bake” first. I’ve never won a contest before and feel really great about this cookbook being in my keeping. Thanks again!

OMG! Diane. So the truth comes out – your own english muffins and bread! I must come to your kitchen for a hands-on lesson. And I would love a copy of that lemon meringue recipe (not to mention a taste of the pie). Glad I’m providing inspiration – nothing makes me happier!

Congrats to the winners! Go for it! The “Baked” book looks wonderful. I love baking more than anything, tho now that our children are grown and gone, I don’t bake so much anymore. I am making two lemon meringue pies, tho, this week, for a family birthday party! It is an old recipe I have had for years, handed down from my Mom from the Ladies’ Home Journal. And yes, I am making my own pie crusts! Always have, tho I use Crisco. Is that still allowed these days???!!! I also used to make all my own bread, English muffins, rolls, etc., in days gone by. OMG is getting me inspired, once again! Happy baking.
